Holter monitor

A portable ECG that records your heart rhythm for 24 hours to 14 days, at home and during ordinary days.
Palpitations rarely happen to order. A Holter monitor records quietly in the background, so the rhythm during your symptoms can be seen rather than guessed at.
ECG trace on a monitor

Why it may be recommended

  • Palpitations, skipped beats or a racing heart
  • Dizziness, blackouts or near-fainting
  • Checking how well a rhythm treatment is working
  • Screening after an abnormal ECG

How to prepare

  • Shower before the monitor is fitted; you cannot bathe while wearing it
  • Wear a loose top on the day
  • Keep a simple diary of symptoms and times
  • Continue your usual medicines unless told otherwise

On the day

  1. Small electrodes are placed on your chest and connected to a light recorder
  2. You go home and carry on with ordinary activities
  3. You note the time whenever you feel a symptom
  4. The monitor is returned by post or in person when the recording ends

Your results

The recording is analysed and reported by a consultant cardiologist. Dr Sultan explains what was found, what it means for you and whether any treatment or further test is needed.

If symptoms are severe

A monitor is not for emergencies. If you have chest pain that does not settle, collapse with injury or severe breathlessness, call 999.

Can I sleep with the monitor on?

Yes. Most people sleep normally. Keep the recorder beside you rather than under the pillow.
Yes. Carry on with your normal routine so the recording reflects ordinary days — just keep the monitor dry.
Press it back on firmly and note the time in your diary. If it will not stay on, contact the practice for advice.
Once the monitor is returned, the recording is analysed and reported by a consultant cardiologist. The practice will tell you when to expect your results.
